چکیده

Periodontitis is an immunoinflammatory disease that causes destruction of tooth supporting tissues. It is characterized by mulifactorial etiology involving bacterial biofilm and an inflammatory host response. The inflammatory ho destruction; thus novel therapeutic modalities should be considered that modulates host response. The proven efficacy of bisphosphonates to inhibit osteoclast bone resorption has led to their us modulating agent in the persepective of preventing the alveolar bone loss. Bisphosphonates were also proposed to have osteostimulative properties in vivo; thus can be used with bone regenerative materials to potentiate bone regeneration This use of novel aminobisphosphonate alendronate in periodontal therapy.

In vitro assessment of alendronate toxic and apoptotic effects on human dental pulp stem cells

Objective(s): Osteonecrosis of the jaw, as an exposed necrotic bone in the oral cavity, is one of the adverse effects of bisphosphonates, which have an affinity for bone minerals. This study investigates the cytotoxic effects of alendronate (ALN) as a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate, on human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). Materials and Methods: The mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), obtained ...

Severely suppressed bone turnover: a potential complication of alendronate therapy.

Alendronate, an inhibitor of bone resorption, is widely used in osteoporosis treatment. However, concerns have been raised about potential oversuppression of bone turnover during long-term use. We report on nine patients who sustained spontaneous nonspinal fractures while on alendronate therapy, six of whom displayed either delayed or absent fracture healing for 3 months to 2 yr during therapy....

Effect of concomitant administration of eicosapentaenoic acid and alendronate on bone changes due to methylprednisolone in rats

One of the main limitations of glucocorticoid therapy is its negative effects on bones. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of concurrent administration of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and alendronate on bone changes induced by glucocorticoid treatment in rats. Thirty six male Wistar rats, who were 2.5 months of age, were divided equally into six groups and treated with normal sal...

Alendronate-Related Femoral Fracture in a premenopausal glucocorticoid treated patient

Abstract Background: Alendronate is a bisphosphonate that is approved to reduce bone loss in glucocorticoid treated patients. In this paper, we present a case of femoral fracture following the use of Alendronate. Case presentation: A- 46 year old woman who was a known case of hemolytic anemia has been treated by prednisolone (with different doses from 7.5 to 75 mg/day), calcium-D 500 mg/day a...

The Effect of Alendronate on Symptoms of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is a common degenerative joint disorder and a major cause of pain and disability. Recent studies have suggested that bisphosphonates such as alendronate may have a role in the treatment of osteoarthritis. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the potential effect of alendronate on the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. Methods: Thirty nine patients wi...
